The University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Land and Food Systems (LFS) is seeking an MSc Research Assistant to study water use in irrigated forage fields in the Lower Fraser and Okanagan Valleys. The MSc position is funded for two years and supported by the LFS Climate and Environment Research Fund (CERF).
The project will involve installation of evapotranspiration and soil moisture sensors and analysis of crop water balance to determine reference evapotranspiration values that will assist local farmers in better understanding their crop water requirements.
Experience with agrometeorological or micrometeorological instrumentation is preferred but not required. It is desirable that the candidate has a driver’s license and experience with MATLAB, R or Python.
The student will work with Drs. Andy Black, Simone Castellarin, and Thorsten Knipfer from UBC LFS, along with Dr. Love-Ese Chile from the BC Agricultural Climate Action Network (ACARN) and Andy Nadler from Peak Hydromet Solutions.
Start date: September 1, 2026
Research assistantship: $24,000/year, with the opportunity to increase to $28,000/year through Teaching Assistantships.
